Hardcore techno is a genre of electronic dance music rooted in the underground rave scene of the 1980s and 1990s. It's known for its high-energy sound and fast beats, has been a fixture of the electronic music scene for decades, and remains hugely popular with fans of underground and experimental music.
One of the defining features of hardcore is its speed. Beats in hardcore techno usually sit between 160 and 180 BPM, making it one of the fastest genres in electronic dance music. That pace creates a sense of urgency and energy.
The genre emerged in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and Germany, as a more extreme and experimental take on techno and house. It spread quickly across the continent and eventually the rest of the world. Frenchcore and uptempo both grew out of it later.
With events, festivals and labels all across Europe, the genre is gradually gaining mainstream recognition too.
